Job Summary:

The Teaching Professor position is an integral part of the Consumer Science Department and will have both instructional and programmatic responsibilities. Within this context, the Teaching Professor position is responsible for providing curricular leadership for the program and delivering rigorous instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Teaching Professor will provide a strong and clear vision for personal finance education that responds to the increasingly complex challenges of the 21st century and will collaborate with department faculty and staff to develop curriculum and academic content that align with the vision. This position contributes to developing teaching and learning scholarly work through publications and presentations at national and international scholarly venues. Remaining up to date in the personal finance field with ongoing professional development through participation in the design industry and community partnerships, educational and professional associations and committees are also expected.

Reporting to the Chair of Consumer Science, the Teaching Professor will prepare syllabi, develop appropriate course learning objectives, set student assignments, grade student work, and be available to meet with students through office hours and by appointment. Specifically, the Teaching Professor will teach courses within the Personal Finance program curriculum and related elective courses; this includes but is not limited to the following subject areas: Estate Planning, Risk Management and Insurance, Family Financial Planning (Case-Based).

The Teaching Professor also will work closely with undergraduate students to enhance their experiential learning opportunities and professional development. Student professional development may include supporting conference travel and competitions. A 100% teaching appointment in SoHE consists of teaching 12 credits or equivalent in fall and spring semesters. Additional summer teaching opportunities (with commensurate summer salary) may be available. The candidate must be flexible in teaching and other programmatic assignments to meet department needs. Teaching responsibilities may be substituted with other duties related to enhancing student experiences or other projects as determined by the Department Chair. The Teaching Professor will be expected to continue to develop and improve teaching skills.

Education:

Required
PhD or terminal degree in Consumer Science, Personal Finance, or closely related field

Qualifications:

The Teaching Professor rank (assistant, associate, or full) is commensurate with experience levels in industry and teaching experience. Qualified candidates will have the following skills and abilities:
- At least one year of previous teaching experience or transferable skills with motivation to excel in higher education
- Strong communication skills
- Evidence of innovativeness and creativity
- Sound judgement, maturity and professionalism, and an ability to take initiative and build team spirit
- Ability to work effectively within a diverse community
- Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
- Promote respect and the practice of civility in the workplace
- Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation or willingness to obtain CFP within 2 years

Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional relevant financial professional designations (CLU, ChFC, CFA, CPA)

CONSUMER SCIENCE: The Department of Consumer Science increases knowledge about the interaction of consumers as individuals and household members with public and private markets for goods and services. Activities of the department are designed to foster development of a fair marketplace that enhances the interests and well-being of consumers, families and communities. The Department is home to a Ph.D. program in Consumer Behavior & Family Economics and two undergraduate majors in Consumer Behavior & Marketplace Studies and Personal Finance. It is also the administrative home for two campus-wide centers: the Kohl's Center for Consumer Behavior and Marketplace Studies and the Center for Financial Security.

SCHOOL OF HUMAN ECOLOGY: The mission of the School of Human Ecology is to understand the complex relationships and interdependence among individuals, groups and families, and to focus on quality-of-life issues through research, creative innovation, education, and outreach. The School has four academic departments (Civil Society & Community Studies, Consumer Science, Design Studies, and Human Development & Family Studies) with a collective undergraduate enrollment of over 2,400 students, and 100 graduate students.
