Job Opportunity: Public Health Educator

Grade 9, $55,135 per year

The Onondaga County Health Department is seeking a dedicated and qualified Public Health Educator to join the Syracuse Healthy Start Program. This grant-funded position focuses on improving health outcomes for pregnant women, mothers, infants, and families in the Syracuse area, with a particular emphasis on reducing health disparities related to maternal and child health. As part of a collaborative, community-driven initiative, the Public Health Educator will play a key role in developing, implementing, and supporting health education strategies that promote healthy behaviors, prevent adverse health outcomes, and advocate for the well-being of the community.

Responsibilities of the Public Health Educator:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate health education programs aimed at improving maternal and child health, focusing on reducing infant mortality, promoting prenatal care, and addressing social determinants of health.
  • Conduct outreach and education activities to engage the community, particularly prenatal and new mothers, with information on topics such as nutrition, breastfeeding, safe sleep practices, and access to healthcare services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, healthcare providers, local government agencies, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and ensure effective program delivery.
  • Coordinate and lead community workshops, educational sessions, and training programs to increase awareness about maternal and child health issues.
  • Provide ongoing support to participants in the program, offering resources, referrals, and follow-up as needed to ensure positive health outcomes.
  • Advocate for policy changes that address maternal and child health disparities within the community.
  • Collect and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of health education initiatives and make recommendations for program improvements.
  • Actively engage with the Syracuse Healthy Start team to contribute to program planning, reporting, and community events.
  • Participate in other areas/projects as needed to support the department and program as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in Education, Nursing, Epidemiology, Wellness and Fitness, Nutrition, Marketing, Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field, with at least one (1) year of relevant work experience in public health education, community outreach, or health promotion.
  • OR Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Education, or a closely related field.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid New York State driver’s license and reliable transportation, or the ability to provide proof of mobility within the assigned community.
  • Ability to attend mandatory training and meetings as directed by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
  • Flexibility to work evenings or weekends when necessary to accommodate community events and outreach activities.
  • Ability to travel locally for community engagement activities, and occasional overnight stays for regional or state-level meetings and conferences.

Position Schedule:

  • Full-time, 35 hours per week (Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours required to support community education and outreach events.

Additional Information:

  • This is a grant-funded position with the Syracuse Healthy Start Program.
  • Permanent appointment will be made in accordance with New York State Civil Service rules.
