This position will support research on sustainable crop production in controlled and field environments. The person hired will serve as a key support to the Principal Investigator of the project. The research activities will include physical activities including bending, lifting, and operating field experimental equipment and pots containing growing media amongst others.
This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.
Responsibilities:
Assist project team to design studies to evaluate the impacts of different environmental conditions and production methods on the growth yield and nutritional contents of selected niche crops and microgreens.
Lead field experiments to determine the effects of cultural practices on the yield and nutritional contents of selected niche and traditional crops.Â
Lead field instrumentation and field measurement of crop growth, soil parameters, and greenhouse gas emissions in experimental plots. Organize and analyze project data to develop high-quality journal articles for publication as well as conference and training presentations.
Coordinate nutritional and phytochemical analyses of plant samples from experiments as well as soil samples taken from experimental fields. Assist project team to conduct relevant and scale-appropriate hands-on learning programs for students, Extension Agents, and farmers.
Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, committees and performs other duties as deemed necessary.
Required Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in Agronomy, Crop Science, Sustainable Agriculture, or a closely related field.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience conducting field experiments, relevant field instrumentation and laboratory analytical equipment.
Knowledge and experience with data management and use of relevant statistical software such as SAS, JMP and R.
Demonstrated ability to work alone and in a multi-disciplinary team comprising staff as well as graduate and undergraduate students.
Demonstrated interest and ability to publish in recognized peer-reviewed journals related to the project area.
Preferred Qualifications:
Grant writing.
Experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
Demonstrated experience with nutrients and phytochemical analyses.
