The Department of Epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Scientists.
The Postdoctoral Research Scientists will join a cohort of at least 3 incoming fellows within the CDC-funded Columbia Center for Injury Science and Prevention at the Mailman School of Public Health. We are seeking to grow our community of interdisciplinary scientists by substantially expanding our program of training for early career researchers. Successful applicants will have training in epidemiology or similar disciplines in public health or social and behavioral sciences, including biostatistics, education, economics, sociology, criminology, and psychology. The incoming cohort will work with Drs. Charles Branas, Sonali Rajan, Christopher Morrison, and others in the Center and Department, including other postdoctoral scholars.
The incoming Postdoctoral Research Scientists will have opportunities to contribute to ongoing Center research activities, including studies of strategies to prevent community gun violence, school gun violence, opioid overdose, alcohol-related injury, adverse childhood experiences, road traffic crashes, and other critical areas of public health and safety. In addition, when it is of value to their training and career development, the Postdoctoral Research Scientist will be involved in data collection, data harmonization and analyses, leading and collaborating on grant proposals, delivering presentations at scientific meetings, and other research and methodological career development.
Postdoctoral Research Scientists will receive training and mentorship in grant proposal writing, epidemiologic methods, and injury prevention science. They will have structured opportunities to develop their proposal writing, their methodological skills, and their substantive knowledge of injury prevention science. They will have opportunities to lead and/or co-author manuscript publications and new extramural grant proposals. The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will be expected to continue any prior research that they may bring with them and also generate new research of their own, potentially in concert with other investigators within the Columbia Center for Injury Science and Prevention and across Columbia University.
The Postdoctoral Research Scientist position offers two or three years of a postdoctoral fellowship with compensation commensurate with experience, an excellent benefits package, and funds for travel to professional conferences and meetings. Individuals with the following characteristics will be particularly competitive for this position: strong motivation and commitment to a career in injury prevention science, publications, excellent communication and quantitative skills, and experience with and the ability to conduct self-directed and collaborative research.
