Position Statement: The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is seeking a Nuclear Safety Health Physics Technician I in the Office of Nuclear Safety. This position will serve as a license reviewer for the Radioactive Materials Division. The incumbent will perform complex technical review of requests to use radioactive materials in research, academic, industrial and medical applications. The Radioactive Materials Division employs professional, technical team members to support Illinoisans in the safe and secure use of radioactive materials. Essential Functions

  • Reviews requests for new or amended radioactive material licenses, radiation protection plans, procedures and facility designs to assure compliance with appropriate standards.
  • Prepares licensing documents authorizing use of radioactive material, including the necessary radiation safety conditions to ensure compliance with regulations and adequate public and worker protection.
  • Assists in development of and suggests improvements to new regulations and revisions of existing regulations as needed.
  • Conducts pre-licensing site visits, conducts health, safety, and security inspections, and investigates incidents or problem areas of radioactive material licensees; determines compliance by using specialized test equipment and radiation measuring instruments.
  • Performs the duties of an assigned team position as specified in the Standard Operating Procedures of the Illinois Plan for Radiological Accidents.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree with major course work in physics, chemistry, engineering, mathematics or related life science and preferably including course work in nuclear sciences.
  • Requires one (1) year of professional experience in the practice of health physics, radiochemistry, environmental safety, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of academic or work experience employing knowledge of ionizing radiation, the physical and chemical properties of radioisotopes, and the biological effects of radiation.
  • One (1) year of academic or work experience employing knowledge of radiation protection standards, radiation measuring equipment, radiochemistry, and/or environmental monitoring methods.
  • One (1) year of work experience evaluating compliance with applicable regulatory or technical standards.
  • One (1) year of academic or work experience preparing effective written communications on complex, technical issues.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires a criminal history check with the Illinois State Police.
  • Requires the ability to use state-supplied equipment such as cell phone, laptop, etc.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
