Overview:
Under direct supervision of the Clinical Manager as well as the Dermatologist, the Histotech Medical Assistant/Scribe will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Dermatologist.
Qualifications:
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED, some college preferred, 5 plus years of experience as a Mohs Technician.
- Histotechnology School preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Valid driver’s license and auto insurance.
Job Duties:
- Prepares sections of human tissue for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis, using techniques to gross (dissect tissue), embed (orient specimen in paraffin block), section (cut thin sections of tissue), stain (enhance contrast of tissue and highlight specific features of interest with routine hematoxylin and eosin stains), and mount tissue (adhere tissue onto glass slides), from surgical procedures.
- Examine slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
- Examine/study slides under microscope to detect deviations from norm and report abnormalities which may require further study.
- Performs recuts and additional stains including special and immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by Dermatologist.
- Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Dermatologist.
- May label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes and/or slides and affixes coverslip to slides.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
- Files, retrieves, and distributes blocks, slides, and pathology reports.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including computerized documentation, in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.
- Establish and monitor quality control programs.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, material, and equipment.
- Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstation.
- Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
- Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
- All clinical aspects of rooming a patient, taking vitals, patient history and obtaining preliminary visit information.
- Patient communication via call-backs and in the clinic.
- Assist with procedures.
- Oversee phototherapy for patients as scheduled.
- Send, receive and accurately route referrals and precertification information for surgical procedures, complete prior authorizations as required by patients’ insurance carriers for medication management. Complete all patient call backs daily.
- Perform injections as ordered by Providers.
- Accurately document social history, review of systems, family history, procedures, and physical exams in real time during patient appointments, scribe abnormal findings given by the provider in real time during patient appointments, order medications and lab work at Providers direction, wait for provider electronic signatures, give medication instructions, and document medications prescribed during patient appointments.
- Deliver biopsy results to patients after provider instruction.
- Recognize physical exam process and ability to record exam details in real time during patient appointment.
- Assist providers with taking digital photos of patients per provider instruction. Ensure patient’s photo consent has been obtained and signed by patient.
- Obtain records from other providers when necessary or requested for coordination of care.
- Document elements needed in Epic for meaningful use criteria.
- Complete authorization forms on behalf of patients for procedures and medications.
- Accurately explain and discuss biologic medications with patients who are candidates, per provider.
- Assist with community skin cancer screenings with providers when scheduled.
- Accurately provide oversight for medical assistants on medication refills, patient calls, biopsy results, room stocking, pathology log, instrument sterilization, procedure packs, biologic process for candidates.
- Drive to satellite clinics as assigned.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Education:
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED, some college preferred, 5 plus years of experience as a Mohs Technician.
- Histotechnology School preferred.
- Maintenance of current Basic Life Support (BLS).
